Dr Jonathan Ambler
Dr Jonathan Ambler MB BS MD FRCA FFICM
Dr Ambler qualified in 1993 from UMDS (Guy's campus), University of London.
He undertook anaesthetic SpR training in the Wessex Deanery, with subspecialist training as a Cardiac Fellow in 2001-2 at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He spent a year as a Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Fellow at Green Lane / Auckland City Hospitals, New Zealand in 2003-4.
He obtained the Perioperative TEE exam of American Society of Echocardiography Dallas Texas in 2004.
Dr Ambler was awarded his MD (University of London) in 2009.
He was appointed as Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at University Hospitals Plymouth in 2005 and is currently Clinical Lead for Cardiac Intensive Care.
He is a Senior Academic Tutor (Y3-5) at Peninsula Medical School since 2019.
Dr Somnath Bagchi
Dr Somnath Bagchi is a consultant in anaesthesia and leads the chronic and cancer pain services at University Hospitals Plymouth
He is a faculty tutor for Pain Medicine and has a special interest in regional blocks.
He was awarded the Key Workers Award by BBC Devon for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He has presented both nationally and internationally on the management of complex cancer pain patients.
Dr Matt Boyd
Dr Matthew Boyd graduated from Manchester University in 2005 shortly after joining the Army.
His early medical career included work in a number of U.K. hospitals as well as Afghanistan and South Africa. Following this he moved to the South West to train as an Anaesthetist with Overseas Fellowships in Toronto and Lusaka.
He remains a serving Military Anaesthetist. When not deployed his regular work at University Hospitals Plymouth covers major cancer resections, elective arthroplasty and trauma.
He is a regular practitioner of regional anaesthesia aiming to achieve optimum analgesia for his patients.
Dr Tom Bradley
Dr Bradley qualified from University of Bristol in 2006.
He trained in the Peninsula and Severn Deaneries and also in Adelaide, Australia. Dr Bradley completed a Fellowship in Head, Neck and Complex Airway Anaesthesia at Stanford University, California, USA, in 2018.
He was appointed in 2019 as Consultant Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Plymouth, where he has a specialist interest in ENT, Maxillofacial, head and neck anaesthesia.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and holder of the Diploma of Mountain Medicine
Dr Steve Bree
Dr Steve Bree is a Consultant Anaesthetist based at University Hospitals Plymouth where he is Head of Department.
His clinical interests are broad based and include vascular, paediatric and trauma anaesthesia
He has recently left the Royal Navy after 40 years service where his roles included Clinical Director of Royal Marine Surgical teams, Head of Military Anaesthesia and a 3-year posting to the USA based in Virginia working as the UK Surgeon Generals LO to the US Military.
He founded and was Chair of the Defence Paediatric Specialist Interest Group with a particular interest in education and improving the management of paediatric casualties in conflict zones.
He has deployed operationally multiple times and was honoured to be appointed Queens Honorary Physician
Dr Theresa Burnett
Dr Burnett has over 30 years experience in anaesthesia. She specialises in providing comprehensive general and regional anaesthesia care for adults undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures.
She joined Derriford Hospital in 2016 as a Consultant in Neuroanaesthesia, delivering a range of anaesthesia services, with a particular focus on neuro and thoracic anaesthesia.
Qualified in Poland in 1990, Wrocław University, she has a rich international background, having practiced in Poland before moving to the UK in 2008. Her commitment to the advancement of medical education and standards in anaesthesia is reflected in her contributions to the Penninsula Medical School and her role as an examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA).

Dr Sean Edwards
Dr Sean Edwards MBChB FRCA EACVI
Dr Sean Edwards graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2009 and subsequently worked in Emergency Medicine in Australia for 2 years. Following this he completed specialist anaesthetic training in the Peninsula deanery securing a consultant post at Derriford Hospital in 2021.
Dr Edwards has a specialist interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care medicine at the Greenlane CVICU in Auckland, New Zealand. This post included management of patients for heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support including ECMO as well as complex ENT procedures. He has a special interest in perioperative transoesophageal echo and is a fellow of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI).
Dr Edwards is the anaesthetic lead for preassessment within the cardiothoracic directorate focussing on optimising patients before complex surgery and shared decision making with the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Dr Erasmus completed his undergraduate medical school training in Cape Town South Africa. He subsequently undertook anaesthetic training in the Wessex region with a clinical fellowship at Royal Perth Hospital Australia.

Dr Jeremy Fabes
Dr Fabes MA MSc BM BCh PhD FRCA
Dr Fabes is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Derriford hospital.
He holds an Honorary Associate Professorship at the University of Plymouth and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Southampton Biomedical Research Centre.
He is the Anaesthetic Lead for the South West NIHR Regional Research Delivery Network.
His main clinical and research foci are around transplantation, haemorrhage and coagulation, in particular how we can optimise management in these settings to improve patient outcomes.

Dr Jayarajah qualified from St George’s Hospital medical School, University of London in 1986. He continued his specialist training in cardiothoracic perioperative care at the Royal Brompton, Royal London and London Chest Hospitals. In 1997 he was appointed as Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at University Hospitals Plymouth.
He holds practice privileges in general anaesthesia at the Wellington Hospital, St John’s Wood, St Anthony’s Hospital, Cheam and at the Nuffield Hospital Plymouth since 1998.
He is a specialist in cardiothoracic medicine, airway management and echo cardiology, as well as all aspects of regional anaesthesia.
His main non clinical interests involve the strategic improvement of human health. To this end; he is involved in a number international Research collaborations and published in the New England Journal of Medicine ; Chair of the Two Magnolias Venture capital fund 2, Health and Life sciences board and holds advisory roles for a number of UK life sciences Companies.

Dr N Mahmood qualified from Dow Medical College University of Karachi, Pakistan in 1982. Her postgraduate training includes four years in internal medicine in Doncaster, South Yorkshire during which she obtained her MRCP UK and joined anaesthesia as her area of specialist interest. She gained her specialist training in cardiothoracic perioperative care at Papworth Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, UK.
In 1997 she was appointed as Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust.
Dr Mahmood holds practice privileges at the St Anthony’s Hospital, Cheam since 2018 and at the Nuffield Hospital Plymouth since 1998.

Dr Oldman qualified from St Georges Hospital Medical School, London in 1994. He undertook his registrar training in Anaesthesia in the SW Peninsula Deanery.
During this time he developed an interest in regional anaesthesia and subsequently undertook fellowship training at Toronto Western Hospital, Canada in 2002.
Dr Oldman was appointed as a Consultant at Derriford Hospital in 2005 where he is currently clinical lead for orthopaedic anaesthesia, and regional anaesthesia.
He has a special interest in ultrasound guided regional Anaesthesia for awake surgery for both upper and lower limb procedures.
Dr Oldman is active in regional anaesthesia education both nationally and internationally and is an examiner for the European Diploma in Regional Aanesthesia.

Dr Andrew Porter
Dr Andrew Porter MBBS FRCA
Dr Porter attended Guy’s Hospital Medical School from 1984 to 1989.
He started anaesthetic training at Derriford Hospital in 1991, and subsequently graduated from the North East School of Anaesthesia and became a Consultant Anaesthetist (with special interest in Intensive Care) in 2000.
He moved back to the South West as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital late 2001 where he has continued.
Dr Porter is very familiar with providing anaesthetic care for all the surgical specialties carried out at Plymouth Nuffield Hospital.
He has a particular interest in Vascular Access and regularly inserts the more complicated types of vascular devices to support patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, having long term antibiotics or total parentral nutrition (TPN).
He is keen advocate of regional anaesthesia (usually provided in combination with general anaesthesia). The main goal of this is to provide his patients with the best possible pain relief that modern anaesthetic techniques allow.

Dr Paul Sice

Dr Paul Sice has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital since 2007.
His regular NHS clinical commitments include anaesthesia for emergency surgery, head and neck (maxillofacial) /ENT surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and he co-runs the service for investigation of perioperative anaphylaxis.
His NHS work also involves working flexibly across a range of surgical specialties.
He has a special interest in simulation-enhanced learning and has previously run a module on a M.Sc. programme (University of Plymouth) in Simulation and Patient Safety.
He is actively involved in the education of medical students and anaesthetists in training and teaches for the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Dr Steynor qualified in 2005 from the University of Birmingham. He undertook the majority of his anaesthetic training in the West Midlands and spent a year in Auckland, New Zealand completing his obstetric anaesthetic fellowship.
He was appointed as a consultant with a special interest in obstetrics at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth in 2016 and has been a member of Plymouth Anaesthesia since 2018.

After 5 years as a consultant anaesthetist in Somerset he moved back to Devon.
His areas of clinical expertise include anaesthesia for vascular surgery, orthopaedic and plastic surgery and pre-operative assessment of the high-risk surgical patient.
He has an active role in both undergraduate and post graduate medical education. He is the current Training Program Director for Higher Anaesthetic training in the Peninsula.

Dr Tom Woolley
Col Prof Tom Woolley OBE is the Assistant Head of Research for the Defence Medical Services and Emeritus Defence Professor of Military Anaesthesia and Critical Care and Honorary Professor at the University of Plymouth.
He is a consultant anaesthetist in the Army whose NHS work takes place at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
Tom has an interest in Hepato-biliary and colorectal anaesthesia.
Research interests include Trauma resuscitation, with a focus in blood based resuscitation and the management of trauma induced coagulopathy.
